To add a fresh, bright pop of color to the shade garden, try Astilbe 'Black Pearls'. This is a later blooming type with large purple flower plumes that sit above the feathery, dark green foliage. The thick stems are quite sturdy and will not flop over with the weight of the flowers. Pairs well with Hostas, Heucheras, and Ligularias.
