This is a vigorous climbing vine once established and produces lovely white lacecap blooms June-July. The flowers have a light, pleasing scent reminiscent of green apple and cucumber. The plant will start out slow and have a more bushy habit but will become quite vigorous after that. In winter, the peeling reddish-brown bark is particularly attractive against the snow. This is one of our favorite climbers!

Homeowner Growing Tips

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil and will tolerate full sun in cooler climates as long as it gets consistent moisture. It does not do well in hot, humid locations. The vines attach with aerial rootlets, and require a sturdy support, such as a brick chimney, wooden fence or pergola, stone wall, or large tree (won't cling to siding well). Apply a layer of mulch after planting, and provide water regularly the first year or two, to establish. They are heavy feeders, so provide an all-purpose fertilizer after flowering. May be pruned lightly every year to control size if desired; this should be done after flowering. Do not cut this back to the ground.
