Platycodon grandiflorus 'Sentimental Blue' is an adorable plant with balloon-like buds that open into bell-shaped blue flowers. It is an excellent choice for low-growing borders, rock gardens, and containers.

Homeowner Growing Tips

Grow in sun or partial shade. Balloon flowers prefer fertile, moist, well-drained, loamy soil. Amend with compost before planting. Deadhead after flowering. New stems emerge late in spring, so leave old stems in place through winter until new growth appears. Established plants resent transplanting, but thicker side shoots may be separated from the base of the plant in early summer.

I so want these to work

Excellent packing yielded mostly healthy plants. Although small and bent with some crinkled leaves (looking like they had been a bit mashed at the back of a very heavy pallet) with faith, I planted the three of them in a little swath in my garden. All continue to live, and two now have several swelling buds, one of which has opened, giving that satisfying blue tingle in my gardener's heart. Although purchased late in season, which is a gamble, I have hope.
