Astilbe-like European Meadowsweet is a border perennial with striking, ferny leaves. Plants grow in a thick cluster and bloom in early summer with sprays of white flowers. The blooms of this cultivar are occasionally removed to promote additional leaves; it is grown mainly for the green and creamy-yellow variegated foliage. Filipendula ulmaria is excellent for accents or in containers. Early in the spring, clumps can be readily split. A soil that won't dry out in the summer is necessary.
