This neat native has a similar look to Amsonia hubrichtii. It has thin foliage, a vase-like habit, and an airy dome of small purple flowers. The flowers bloom in late summer, extending their beauty. It sort of looks like a cross between Baby's Breath and a purple Aster; mixes well with grasses and other late-summer bloomers. Bred from Vernonia lettermannii, native to the south-central U.S., and another unknown species, for those who like an element of mystery...

Homeowner Growing Tips

Grow in at least 6 hours of full sun, if possible. Prefers soil that is well draining, but is otherwise not fussy about soil type. 'Southern Cross' is more tolerant of dry periods than many other species of Ironweed. May re-seed, so deadhead if this is not desired. Foliage holds up well in winter; cut to the ground in early spring.
