Excellent!

We planted 15 of these in a sunny bed of 30 lavenders (15 Grosso, 15 Munstead, both cold-hardy) and they took off this summer. The key is to prep your soil to mimic sandy, volcanic, well-drained Mediterranean soils. We mixed the rich topsoil of our yard (when it was planted with grass) with equal parts of sand and perlite, plus mixed in some some bonemeal and organic starter fertilizer. Then planted them in mounds 3 feet apart, lightly mulched with shredded hardwood. They needed light but regular watering as the root systems developed but next summer they should do well even if it doesn't rain much.
