This woody-based perennial is valued for its showy clusters of star-shaped, rose-red blooms that perform well even in poor soils. It has a bushy, clump-forming habit and the flowers are fragrant. If not deadheaded, fluffy dandelion-like seeds will be produced and disbursed.

Homeowner Growing Tips

Deadhead or shear back plants after blooming to prevent the spread of seeds if desired. This will also encourage additional blooming. Grow in well-drained soils. Can tolerate dry soil once established and can thrive in poor, infertile soils.

Hardy plants. Look best with some water

My plants were shipped across country to Oregon in two boxes. the only hitch was that the shipping company decided to put the boxes on different trucks and one truck arrived several days later. Despite that the plants all arrived in good condition, due largely to the care taken in preparing them for shipping at Romence.
The second problem was that the landscaper put the drippers in backwards for some of the plants. There is a distinct difference in the appearance of the Centranthus that got regular water and the ones that got none. It's a testimony to their hardiness that they survived some of the hottest, dry days of the summer.
