The heirloom 'Mortgage Lifter' is a huge beefsteak tomato of legendary proportions, consistently winning taste tests and standing the test of time since its development in the 1930s. Fruits can reach up to 4 lbs each, with an average of about 2 1/2 pounds. Perfect for slicing, salsas, and sandwiches.

Homeowner Growing Tips: Plant tomato plants in in well-drained soil and keep them well-watered but not soggy, watering at the soil level rather than with an overhead sprinkler as much as possible. Place a tomato cage over the plant when you first plant it to provide support, or use another trellising method. You may want to choose an organic fertilizer formulated specially for tomatoes. Sufficient calcium in the soil prevents Blossom End Rot, a common tomato ailment. You may also want to try the old Romence Gardens trick of placing a couple of Tums tablets in the soil to help with this.
