Bulb Lasagna Planting: A Fun DIY Project!

3 Bulbs on top of dirt with a small baby plant emerging

Are you looking to add a burst of color to your garden that lasts throughout the seasons? Try "lasagna planting," a method of layering bulbs. This planting method allows you to maximize the space in your garden while creating a beautiful display of flowers that bloom at different times.

What is Lasagna Planting?

Lasagna planting is a gardening technique where you plant different kinds of flower bulbs in layers within the same planting area. By using this method, you can enjoy a continuous display of blooms from early spring to late summer without having to replant the area each time. This method can be used in containers or directly on the ground.

*Below you will find an instructional video where Katey explains and teaches you how to start your very own bulb lasagna!*

Materials

To start your lasagna planting, gather your layers! Select a mix of small, medium, and large spring bulbs for a vibrant display. Choose a beautiful container or find a lovely spot in your garden to create your masterpiece.

Planting Instructions

1. Prepare Your Planting Area: Start by creating a nice layer of soil in your container or hole where you will plant your bulbs.

2. Plant the Largest Bulb: Begin with the tallest bulbs, Narcissus. Arrange them in a large circle, leaving the center empty.

3. Add Soil: Once the daffodils are in place, cover them with a layer of soil.

4. Plant the Medium Bulb: Next, place the Tulip bulbs in the empty center of the circle created by the daffodils.

5. Add More Soil: Cover the tulips with another layer of soil.

6. Plant the Smallest Bulb: Finally, plant the hyacinths. Make sure to place them where there are no bulbs directly below, ideally in the spaces between the circles of daffodils and tulips.

7. Final Layer and Watering: Once all the bulbs are planted, add one last layer of soil on top and water the area thoroughly.

By following these steps, you'll have a beautiful layered bulb garden! You may finish by adding some pansies on the top to admire while we wait for the tulips to emerge.
