  • Rust-colored flowers turn tan in autumn
  • Tough native that's a great accent for any sunny garden

This wonderful grass forms a lovely clump of steely blue-green leaves that are non-invasive. In late summer tan-colored spikes of inflorescences appear above the foliage. It makes a great vertical element in a border and works well in containers.

Native to the eastern and central U.S., Sorghastrum was one of the dominant grasses of the tallgrass prairie that covered much of the midwest. Also provides a bounty of seeds to feed the birds through autumn and winter! An interesting and colorful addition to formal or more casual landscapes, native gardens, for erosion control on slopes, or try it where you hang feeders for finches and other small birds.

Uses: Borders, Containers, Cottage Gardens, Erosion Control, Landscapes, Mass Planting, Naturalizing, Screening
Nature Attraction: Birds
Critter Resistance: Deer
Notable Features: Cut Flower, Drought Tolerant, Native
Growth Habit: Upright

Homeowner Growing Tips: Grow in full sun, in well-drained soil. Tolerates drought, low fertility, and a wide range of soils, including poor, dry soils, shallow, rocky soils, and clay. Allow to stand through autumn & winter for visual interest & to feed the birds. Cut spent foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
