  • Classic large, yellow daisy-type flowers with brown centers
  • Important native prairie & meadow plant, now one of the most popular cultivated plants
  • Quintessential flower for cottage gardens and bird & butterfly gardens

A superb, steadfast plant that brings a mass of color to any landscape. Has gorgeous yellow daisy-like flowers with raised centers that are a rich, dark brown color. Foliage is oblong and dark green. Flowers are long-lasting and can be cut to promote continuous bloom and then left for winter interest. A truly excellent garden plant that attracts butterflies with its nectar, birds with its seeds, and admiring neighbors with its spectacular long-season color. Native to eastern U.S. Perennial Plant of the Year award winner, 1999.

Uses: Borders, Cottage Gardens, Flower Beds, Landscapes, Mass Planting, Naturalizing, Rain Gardens, Xeriscaping
Nature Attraction: Bees, Butterflies, Hummingbirds
Critter Resistance: Deer
Notable Features: Native, Cut Flower, Tolerates Clay Soils, Rocky Soils, & Drought
Growth Habit: Upright, Mounding

Homeowner Growing Tips: Grow in full sun or partial shade, in well-drained soil. Very good in heavy, clay soils. Prefers not to dry out, but is somewhat drought tolerant once established. Avoid overcrowding, as these like good air circulation. Deadhead throughout the season to encourage rebloom; leave the final spent flower stalks on the plant in autumn, as the seeds will feed the birds; cut back in late winter. Divide in spring, if desired.
