Plant a Tomato - "Sweet 100" if you want an abundance of sweet goodies that are both excellent for you and hard to quit eating! Named because each plant typically bears more than 100 tiny, delectable fruits that are smaller than cherry tomatoes and emerge in clusters on long branches. To prevent pests and diseases and to keep the fruit off the ground, stake or cage these tenacious climbers.

Homeowner Growing Tips: Plant tomato plants in in well-drained soil and keep them well-watered but not soggy, watering at the soil level rather than with an overhead sprinkler as much as possible. Place a tomato cage over the plant when you first plant it to provide support, or use another trellising method. You may want to choose an organic fertilizer formulated specially for tomatoes. Sufficient calcium in the soil prevents Blossom End Rot, a common tomato ailment. You may also want to try the old Romence Gardens trick of placing a couple of Tums tablets in the soil to help with this.
