Homeowner Growing Tips: Grow in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil amended with compost. Provide shelter from windy sites to avoid shredded leaves. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season. Cut the stem back to about 2' in autumn in zones 5-8, making sure the roots well are well mulched; remaining dead material can be removed in spring. Alternatively, overwinter indoors in a large container, keeping barely moist. The plant may flower and fruit if planted in the ground in zones 9-10.
