Craft beer is booming here in Michigan and around the country, and gardeners and brewers alike know the beauty of good, homegrown 'Cascade' Hops. This is a vigorous perennial vine that produces the key ingredient for the "bitter" in your beer. 'Cascade' has a relatively low bittering value and is one of the most popular varieties used in American craft brewing. It can grow as high as 10 to 20 feet, so proper trellising or an existing structure is necessary to give this vine a place to climb. This is a nice way to grow a summer screen in the yard, or over an arbor for shade and a beautiful, fragrant atmosphere for outdoor seating. 'Cascade' hops are also good for picking, drying, and baling--or as an accent to flower arrangements!

Uses: Trellis and Arbors
Nature Attraction: Butterflies
Critter Resistance: Deer, Rabbits
Notable Features: Drought Tolerant, Fragrant
Growth Habit: Climbing
Homeowner Growing Tips: Provide trellis, fense, post, or arbor for your hops to climb. They require full sun and regular watering to thrive, and mulching plants will help them stay evenly moist. They prefer well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. Vines can be cut back to the ground at the end of the season.
