Homeowner Growing Tips: Pruning Group 2: these varieties begin to bloom in early summer with the first round of flowers on the previous year's growth. The second flush of flowers is produced on the new growth and is usually smaller than the first. Prune can be done in late winter - early spring. Remove dead and weak shoots at this time. Any remaining stems can be cut back to 6" - 9" above a couple of prominent buds.
