- This native vine is a hummingbird magnet
This is a vigorous, woody climber that produces clusters of large, orange-red flowers from summer to autumn. Grow in moist, well-drained, somewhat fertile soil; also tolerant of poorer soils and confined root space. It is tolerant of a variety of conditions, but does best in a warm, sunny spot on a sturdy support, such as a pergola, chain-link fence, chimney, or even a large dead tree. This is a variety of a species native to the south-east U.S., but hardy to Zone 5.

Homeowner Grower Tips: Prune in early spring by thinning crowded branches and cutting remaining side shoots back to 3 or 4 buds. Avoid hacking this hard to the ground or the plant will produce suckers from the roots, which will overrun everything nearby.
