This species, which is widespread throughout the world, can be found in damp, rich woodlands, thickets, fields, meadows, and ravines throughout northern North America, Europe, and Asia. Rich, medium-moisture, well-drained soil in partial to complete shade is ideal for easy growth. unlike many other ferns, it can survive in drier soils. Will, however, only withstand direct sunlight if the soil is kept consistently moist. To prevent fronds from breaking, seek shelter from the wind. Every few years, divide clumps in the spring to reposition crowns near the soil line.
